Project's details

Project title SmartIntake®: Development of a multiplatform smartphone application
Background The research team at Pennington Biomedical Research Center (PBRC) has developed four smartphone applications via federal funding, primarily via the National Institutes of Health and the United State Department of Agriculture, to assess food intake, food intake related behaviors, and other ingestive behaviors. These apps are used in research projects and clinical interventions to quantify and modify health behaviors, namely, food intake. One of the team’s most frequently utilized apps is SmartIntake®, which assesse food intake via pictures of foods captured with smartphones. These images are transferred by the app to the researcher’s server at PBRC where they are analyzed using computer-assisted visual comparison procedures. SmartIntake has been utilized in numerous clinical research studies, but it is only available on Apple devices and not Android devices.
Description The proposed Computer Science Senior Design application is to work with a team of students to translate the existing SmartIntake app into a single set of code that allows the app to be deployed on multiple platforms (e.g., Apple, Android). PBRC owns the IP surrounding the app, though the existing code for the Apple-based SmartIntake app will be shared with the UCD team to facilitate the project. Further, the PBRC team and the programmer who developed the original SmartIntake code will collaborate on the project.
Deliverable A smartphone app that can be deployed on multiple mobile device platforms, namely, Apple and Android.
Skill set desirable It is expected that the team will have the skills and willingness to produce a deliverable that the PBRC team can utilize and maintain into the future. The PBRC team is also eager to collaborate with the UCD students to identify ways to optimize the app and integrate more advanced features.
